Laurel Balanda

LCSW-C

Co-founder of Aspire Wellness Center, I received a Bachelor of Science degree in the field of psychology, and a Master of Social Work degree at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. I have over 10 years of experience in the field, including discharge planning in a hospital setting, director of a psychiatric rehabilitation facility, and psychotherapy. I have also received my certifications as a board-certified Professional Christian Counselor and a Licensed Certified Social Worker-Clinical (LCSW-C). In my free time, I enjoy gardening, traveling, and horseback riding.

 

Jennifer Walker Gerhart

LCPC

Co-founder of Aspire Wellness Center, I have been providing psychotherapy services to children, adolescents, and adults for more than 10 years with proven success. I attended Johns Hopkins University where I earned a Master of Science degree in counseling as well as completed an advanced program of study in clinical psychology with an emphasis on anxiety disorders. I am a board-certified Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) and am also an active member of the American Counseling Association. In my free time, I enjoy being outdoors, listening to music, taking pictures, and being with my family.

Dr. Elizabeth Turin

Medical Director, Psychiatrist

Prior to starting medical school, I completed my bachelor's degrees in biology as well as in economics and finance. I attended medical school at the University at Buffalo and completed my residency in psychiatry and my fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of Maryland through Sheppard Pratt. I work with patients of all ages and treat depression, anxiety, mood disorders, PTSD, and ADHD with a combination of medications and psychotherapy. In my free time, I enjoy lifting weights, playing sports, traveling, and spending time with my family.

 

 

 

 

Whitney Fox

CRNP-PMH, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

I graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park with my bachelor's degree in psychology and criminal justice. I then went on to earn my master's degree through the Clinical Nurse Leader program at the University of Maryland School of Nursing. I practiced as a registered nurse in the psychiatric emergency services unit at the University of Maryland Medical Center for over six years and returned to the University of Maryland to obtain my post-master's certificate in advanced practice nursing. I am a member of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, Nurse Practitioner Association of Maryland, and Sigma Theta Tau Honors Society of Nursing. In my free time, I enjoy seeing my family, taking walks, playing sports, catching up on my favorite shows, and listening to music.

 

 

 

Katharine Sewell

CRNP-PMH, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

In 2004 I began working as a nurse in correctional healthcare where I continued to learn about psychiatric illness, substance abuse, and medication management. I received both my bachelor's andmaster's degrees in Nursing from Wesley College with a secondary focus as a clinical nurse specialist in community health and wellness. I worked in behavioral health case management and emergency psychiatric crisis at Harford Memorial Hospital for seven years before obtaining a post master's certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. In my free time I enjoy traveling, theme parks, and spending time with my friends and family.

 

 

 

Nelly Kangethe

CRNP-PMH, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

I found my niche in mental health while working at John’s Hopkins Hospital as an emergency department nurse case manager. I acquired extensive experience dealing with substance abuse, bipolar disorder, trauma, immigrants, eating, and mood disorders. In 2010, I chose to pursue a postmaster’s degree as a Board Certified Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner at Drexel University to enhance my knowledge in the treatment of mental illness. In my free time I enjoy shopping and having fun with my family!

Kim Morrill

LCSW-C, Executive Director

I graduated with my undergraduate degree in psychology from University of Vermont in 1992. I completed my master’s in social work in 1996 from University of Maryland. I worked at Catholic Charities for 18 years in school based and residential settings. I have 25 years of experience working with children and families with a focus on trauma. I have supervised several community-based programs which serve at risk populations. I have been an active member of the Maryland Human Trafficking Task Force as well as the Family Focused Treatment Association Maryland Chapter. In my free time, I play guitar and sing in a neighborhood band. I just started Bikram Yoga and love coaching my two daughters in lacrosse.

 

 

Ari Jacobson

LCPC, Clinical Director

I began working as a mental health worker for preschool children with behavioral and developmental delays while attending college and I found that I really enjoyed that type of work. As a result, I pursued a master's degree in applied psychology with a concentration in counseling from the University of Baltimore. I have been working in the substance abuse field for over three years, and I have specialized in working with adult abusers of domestic violence, as well as abusers in same sex relationships. I also have extensive experience as an "in house" drug and alcohol counselor for two Baltimore city public schools. In my free time, I go to as many concerts/comedy shows as I can, I never miss a Ravens or Orioles game, and I play lacrosse and basketball.

 

 

 

Jennifer Hermann

I grew up in Delaware and attended the University of Delaware for my undergraduate degree majoring in Psychology and Interpersonal Communication.  After moving to Maryland, I fell in love with the city of Baltimore. I pursued my graduate degree from the University of Baltimore and received a master’s degree in applied psychology, counseling. I have experience working in individual and group settings and with intellectual and developmental disabilities. My areas of special interest are depression, anxiety/stress, relationships, trauma, grief/loss, trauma informed care, and life adjustments. In my free time, I enjoy spending time outdoors, going to O’s games, and heading to the beach. I am a lover of all things orange, pumpkin, and Disney.

 

 

 

Amberleigh Yoegel

LGPC, Program Director

I earned my undergraduate degree in psychology and criminology from the University of Maryland, College Park. After graduating, I started working at Sheppard Pratt Hospital as a mental health worker on the inpatient psychotic disorders unit. While working with this population, I realized that I wanted to be a therapist. I decided to go back to school and earned my masters degree in applied psychology with a concentration in counseling from the University of Baltimore. During my internship, I worked with a variety of clients, including those with anxiety disorders and psychotic disorders. In my free time, I enjoy cooking and eating (I am a total "foodie"), singing, and spending time with my family and friends.

 

 

Julie Harris

LGSW, Therapist

I was born in Baltimore and am an onsite therapist at Aspire. After studying sociology at Haverford College, I was inspired to combine my passion for social justice with my interest in mental health. I began working as a peer counselor at the Berkeley Free Clinic. Later, I earned my master’s degree in social work at the University of California Berkeley School of Social Work, where I specialized in geriatric practice. I really enjoy being in nature, cooking, practicing yoga, and meditation.

 

 

 

 

 

Natalie Beglau-Pueyo

I am a California native where I first began my journey into becoming a therapist with a bachelor’s degree in theatre and double minors in psychology and musical theatre at the University of Southern California, followed by a master's degree in depth psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara. When I moved to Baltimore, I attained additional training at John's Hopkins University, earning a post master's certificate in mental health counseling. I have experience working with trauma survivors, disordered eating, substance abuse, and mood disorders. I love to use art, drama, mindfulness and depth psychology influenced approaches to my work with clients. In my free time, I enjoy playing guitar, singing, traveling and I love to get outside, especially to coach and row, hike, run, garden and spend time with my family and friends.

 

 

 

Geeta Chattopadhyay

I grew up in Maryland and attended the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) for my undergraduate studies. During my years at UMCP, I worked on several research projects examining attachment theory in the child development lab. I received my bachelor’s degree in psychology in 2006 and then served as a referral and intake specialist at a counseling center. I attended Towson University and received my master’s degree in counseling in 2009. At Towson, I had the opportunity to counsel students with academic and personal issues. I enjoy providing individual therapy as well as leading support groups. I also have experience with organizing seminars and self-empowerment workshops for women. In my free time, I like to practice yoga, listen to music, travel, and spend time with my family and friends.

 

 

 

 

Edyta Chrzanowska

I grew up in Maryland and attended Towson University. I received my master’s degree in counseling psychology and have experience working with children, adolescents, and adults with a heavy focus on the family system. I also enjoy working with youth who are on the Autism Spectrum in both research and therapeutic settings. I am very passionate about getting involved in community outreach projects, especially ones that help guide Maryland’s youth towards a purpose-filled future. In my free time I enjoy both yoga and mindfulness practices and am fortunate enough to also have become a certified yoga instructor. I love all outdoor activities, spending time with my family and friends, listening to live music, journaling, and just relaxing with a book or listening to a podcast.

 

 

 

Amy Bergstrom

I received my bachelor’s degree in psychology and sociology from Illinois College and earned my master’s degree in counseling psychology from Towson University. My clinical experience focuses on adolescents presenting with a variety of mental illnesses such as anxiety, depression, self-harm, impulse control, and trauma. I have experience working in individual, group, and family settings through a Psychiatric Rehabilitation Program for adolescents in Harford County. I personalize therapy to meet client needs and typically use cognitive behavioral therapy, art therapy, motivational interviewing, and reality therapy approaches. I am an onsite and offsite therapist at Aspire. I am an Illinois native who enjoys working out, cooking, reading, and hanging out with friends in my free time.

I've worked in community mental health programs and non-profit agencies for 7 years with children and adults. I have clinical experience working with adults who have experienced trauma, such as those with intellectual and developmental disabilities and substance use disorders. I am passionate about creating an authentic therapeutic relationship and environment for healing. On the weekends, I love spending time with my husband and dog, playing softball, traveling, trying new classes, and going to concerts.

Shane Kelsey

As a native of Maryland, I attended The College of William and Mary for my undergraduate education in Psychology and completed my master’s degree in Applied Psychology from the University of Baltimore.  I have been active in sports as a varsity player, assistant coach, and coach.  For the last four years, I have worked as an Alternative Learning Placement Teacher at Shepard Pratt with children and adolescents who were looking for a positive space to center themselves. I have experience with a wide range of mental health issues including depression, anxiety, interpersonal conflicts, sexual addictions, in both individual and group settings.  My driven spirit enables me to take on tasks and see them through to completion, no matter what the obstacle. I believe people often already possess the tools they need to succeed inside of them and by partnering with them, can help them to reach their goals.  In my free time, I enjoy getting outside, going to the beach, and taking adventures with my dog.

 

 

 

Rachel Sheffel

I am an onsite therapist at Aspire. I earned my undergraduate degree in Sociology and Studio Art from Goucher College and later earned my graduate degree in Mental Health Counseling from Johns Hopkins University. I'm passionate about holistic wellness and believe in taking an empowerment-based, whole person approach to my work. I use a variety of methods and enjoy incorporating creative expression, art and mindfulness into therapy. In my free time I enjoy spending time in nature, reading, painting, hanging out with my cats, and further exploring my interest in mind-body therapies via my work in massage therapy and Reiki.

 

 

 

 

Megan Crawford

From a very young age, I enjoyed helping others. After working with children for many years, I made the decision to complete my master’s degree at the University of Maryland School of Social Work. I continue to spend my career working with individuals and families struggling with various challenges including relationships, parenting, childhood social and behavioral issues, anxiety, and depression. In my spare time, I enjoy visiting with family and friends, exercising, or getting lost in a great TV show or book.

I have worked as an administrative assistant for several years with 15 years of customer service experience. I graduated with my associate’s degree in Psychology, and I have accrued more than five years of customer service experience. During this time, I discovered I wanted to utilize my skills in the medical field and went on to become a certified medical office assistant. Rachel Sheffel

I am an onsite therapist at Aspire. I earned my undergraduate degree in Sociology and Studio Art from Goucher College and later earned my graduate degree in Mental Health Counseling from Johns Hopkins University. I'm passionate about holistic wellness and believe in taking an empowerment-based, whole person approach to my work. I use a variety of methods and enjoy incorporating creative expression, art and mindfulness into therapy. In my free time I enjoy spending time in nature, reading, painting, hanging out with my cats, and further exploring my interest in mind-body therapies via my work in massage therapy and Reiki.

 

 

 

 

Megan Crawford

LCSW-C, Therapist

From a very young age, I enjoyed helping others. After working with children for many years, I made the decision to complete my master’s degree at the University of Maryland School of Social Work. I continue to spend my career working with individuals and families struggling with various challenges including relationships, parenting, childhood social and behavioral issues, anxiety, and depression. In my spare time, I enjoy visiting with family and friends, exercising, or getting lost in a great TV show or book.

I am the executive assistant at Aspire Wellness Center. My goal is to ensure that everyone that walks into Aspire feels welcome and comfortable. I have ten years of experience in the medical field and I am passionate about helping others in need. In my free time, I enjoy cooking, traveling, and catching up on new shows.

I am a certified medical assistant at Aspire Wellness Center. I have been in the medical field for several years now and have found that I am passionate about helping others. It is my goal that every client at Aspire is satisfied! In my free time, I enjoy cooking, sports, and spending time with family and friends.

I have worked as an administrative assistant for several years with 15 years of customer service experience. I enjoy working with our clients and making sure they feel welcome and are treated as a priority. In my free time, I am usually spending time with my family, traveling, or reading a good book.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Catherine Jensen

I graduated with my associate’s degree in Psychology, and I have accrued more than five years of customer service experience. During this time, I discovered I wanted to utilize my skills in the medical field and went on to become a certified medical office assistant. I enjoy knowing I am making a difference with the work that I do. In my free time I enjoy reading, practicing yoga, and spending time with my family.

I have worked in a medical setting for two years and I possess several years of experience in customer service. I found that working in the healthcare field is a great fit for me and I enjoy providing help and support to others. I grew up in Bel Air and have lived in Maryland my whole life. I have an undergraduate degree from McDaniel College, where I majored in psychology, and I am currently taking classes to earn my MBA at University of Maryland University College. Helping others and seeing them grow and thrive is one of the most rewarding things in life.
